Kate's been back to work for about two months now. She's working Monday through Wednesday for the summer. Also she's on call every third weekend (the weekend goes from 6pm Thursday to the following Tuesday).
While Kate's at work for the first three days of the week we have a nanny come in to the house to take care of Sam. The Nanny is a young woman named Megan. Megan just graduated from the University with a degree in Early Childhood Development. She was one of the forty or so people that answered the ad we placed on the UW job board for a nanny. We interviewed the five best looking resumes, and ended up hiring Megan, which was good because she was the last person that we interviewed and while we thought one or two of the others could do the job, none of them impressed us much.
Initially we were looking on getting a nanny rather than having Sam in daycare as sort of the booby prize, but in retrospect we think it's better this way.
He's getting huge amounts of one on one attention, especially relative to other kids his age that are in daycare. When we looked at daycare facilities one of the things that they all had in common was maximum amounts of time that babies would spend watching TV, or being in their crib. Sam never watches TV, and he's only in his crib if he's napping. Other wise she's holding him, or doing tummy time with him, or taking him and the dog on walks, or reading to him, or whatever. At the end of the day we get meticulously kept notes that detail what happened with Sam during the day. Every diaper, bottle, book, nap, and walk are detailed so that we know when they happened, how long they lasted, and what was in them.
We're spending about what we would be spending on daycare for the boy, so it's not cheap, but it's absolutely worth it.
We lose Megan in the fall (she'll need to find a job with health benefits). We're not sure what we're going to do then, but based on this experience, it's likely that we'll get another nanny.

Sounds like you need to adopt Megan so she can be on your benefits! -Brad
