Sam turned one this past Sunday. It seems that this is a much bigger deal to us than it is to him, but he had a good time at the party.
Both sets of grandparents, Aunt Reni and Uncle Aaron and cousin Gavi, and a couple of our friends showed up. In our little house it was probably more people than we really should have, but it was fun nevertheless.
I made chicken and white bean chili (not spicy) and Kate made corn bread. And we got a really impressive birthday cake from a bakery in town. They also made Sam a little five inch cake that he could have all by himself. He (predictably) had a really good time smearing butter cream icing all over himself and spilling handfuls of cake on the floor. Of course, that made Spenser happy too. Fortunately my parents picked up a bone for Spense on the way over, so he was mostly distracted.
Sam got lots of cool stuff that makes noises, or that he can ride on, or both. My brother gave him a salsa kit, complete with a tambourine, castanets, and a marimba. His kids birthday is in June, and I think we're going right to cymbals. He started it.
I didn't manage to get a photo of Sam with birthday cake on his head, I was a little slow on the shutter, but hopefully someone else did. If we get a good one I'll publish it here.
Thanks everyone for coming, and for the neat gifts.

I'd like to commit to buying your brother's kid a vuvuzela.
