We started on solid food last weekend. The doc told us we could do that at our last appointment. Evidently the key is when the baby starts showing interest in food. Sam's way interested in food. He will laser focus on the closer of the two of us (usually Kate) when we're eating, watching the food from our plates to mouths.
So, the doc told us that the current research suggests that it doesn't really matter what we start with, but whatever it is we have to do that for four days or so so that we can determine if he has an allergy to something. We tossed around different ideas of what to go with.
Kate wanted to start with something natural and organic.
I wanted to start with cheeseburgers.
Whatever it is needs to be pureed and mixed with liquid until it gets to a soup-like consistency.
Ultimately we arrived at avocado.
That's not really true. Kate arrived at avocado, I went along for the ride.
If it wasn't going to be cheeseburgers, really, who gives a shit?
Anyhow, organic cheeseburgers are probably harder to find than organic avocados. As it happens, I couldn't find organic avocados either.
So we started with conventional avocado.
Kate took the avocado, mashed it up, and then mixed it with water in order to create a sort of avocado slurry, then we fed the avocado slurry to Sam.
I'm using the word "fed", of course, in the loosest of all possible ways.
Sam sat on my lap, in blue pants (that'll be relevant later) and his Cubs bib. Kate knelt in front of him with the bowl of avocado slurry. My Aunt and Uncle, who were visiting from the east coast, sat on the couch with the camera and took pictures.
So, essentially, Kate alternately shoved avocado slurry into his mouth and then sat back with a big smile and said "MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM". Aunt Esther and Uncle Steve took pictures and generally made a big deal out of the whole thing. I made sure he stayed in the chair.
Did Sam like eating the avocado?
I have no idea.
He clearly enjoyed the event of being fed tremendously.
I couldn't tell you if he liked the avocado.
For that matter, I'm not really certain that he actually ate any of the avocado.
When we got done he had bright green smears on his blue pants, and his Cubs bib looked like it was from some other team.
That's okay though, at least he momentarily had a bib that represents a team that has a chance of winning the world series (since I'm a Cubs fan, I have no idea what that team might be).
He also had a truly impressive amount of avocado slurry in his nose.
Avocado slurry doesn't keep, by the way. It gets really gross in the fridge over night.
I know at least some of you are thinking "gets really gross?" Really, it's relative.
We tried it again the next day, with a new batch of conventional slurry, and he might have actually ingested some of the avocado slurry. We're not certain, but it sort of looked that way.
I'm waiting for him to really get some of it in him, and then spit it up.
I want to get video of that, if it happens. He'll look like the exorcist baby.
Then I'm giving him cheeseburger slurry.
