First off, Kate's not having allergies, she has a full on cold, which pretty well sucks completely. She hasn't taken any cold medicine, which may well be better for the baby, but it means she's doing a lot of coughing and sneezing.
We looked at paint for the baby's room Sunday. We found some colors that we liked, and then Kate asked the lady at Home Depot if she could mix those colors for us in the Low VOC paint.
For those of you that don't know what Low VOC is...
Me neither. But it's supposed to be good for the baby. Or not bad for the baby. Or at least better than normal paint for the baby. Somehow.
Ok, really, I have no clue what Low VOC means. I may not even be spelling it right.
I do know (now) that you can't just pick out a color and get it mixed Low VOC.
You can buy the specific paint that Home Dept sells that's No VOC, which I assume is even better than Low VOC.
Here's the thing about Home Depot's No VOC paint:
The colors completely suck.
We've got the little color cards taped up to the wall in the baby's room. The one Kate likes is called "Radiant Sun". "Radiant Sun" was probably cheaper to print on the card than "The Sort Of Yellowy Color That Cheap White Paint Gets To Be After a Few Years of Neglect and Exposure to Normal Household Fumes Like Cooking Residue and Dog Farts". The first one sounds better, but the second is much more accurately descriptive.
After seeing the rather dismal color selection for the No VOC option Kate was ready to go back to the regular stuff, which I guess I'll call Full VOC. Of course, I had to point out that if this Environmental Correctness thing is only going to last as long as it looks good it isn't going to last long at all. Evidently Environmentally Correct paint has the same appeal in the paint world as a lot of organic vegetables do in the food world.
My buddy Nate pointed out that there are other places to buy paint in Madison besides Home Depot, so we're going to look at those places before painting the room Maybe their Low/No VOC options are better, but I don't expect they will be.
I wonder what all those VOCs have done to me?
